Emily Tollard is an up-and-coming painter who is living life to the fullest. She likes her freedom, doing what she wants, when she wants. Emily doesn’t do relationships or feelings. Letting someone in gives them the power to hurt you, something Emily wants to avoid ever experiencing again. Casual flings and one-night stands are all she needs.
Hale Woods loves love. He’s waiting for that big, all-consuming love he knows is out there for him. When his best friend’s sister comes back to town, he can’t stop thinking about her. Even though he knows he shouldn’t. Even though he knows she’ll break his heart.
When the feelings won’t go away, Emily and Hale give in. For one night, Emily allows herself to feel something real. But the feelings are too strong, making her too vulnerable, so she runs.
Hale is left in pieces, trying to put together his shattered heart. Emily stays away, trying to pretend her world didn’t completely shift after one night. Emily thought she would feel better after getting her attraction out of her system, but why can’t she stop thinking about him? Why does everything look grey now, even her once vibrant paintings?
